About the project
Wikisource is an online wiki-based digital library operated by the Wikimedia Foundation where volunteers transcribe old books and documents. The Bulk OCR feature allows volunteers to OCR multiple pages of a book at once instead of doing it page by page manually. However the current implementation has several critical issues that reduce productivity and cause poor quality text being saved to wiki pages. This will directly benefit thousands of Wikisource volunteers worldwide who transcribe historical documents daily making their work faster more accurate and more enjoyable
The problem I was solving
  • The Bulk OCR tool converted many book pages at once but saved text straight to the wiki with no review step.
  • The project focused on enhancing Wikisource Bulk OCR User Controls and the Feedback mechanism
  • The majority of this project consisted of important bug fixes that were left as backlog items and implementations of significant features that made it more user-friendly.
What I built

A complete review workflow for Bulk OCR:

  • A feedback dialog that opens instantly and streams pages in with a live progress bar
  • Side-by-side image and OCR text review, with a per-page sidebar for navigating the whole book
  • A safety banner warning that Approve affects many pages at once
  • An Approve flow that saves through the MediaWiki API with in-dialog progress, clear errors, and retry of only the failed pages
The result
Four changes merged and two in final review. The feature is deployed behind an admin flag so Wikisource communities can test it, and can be enabled per language through configuration  all built in the open through Gerrit code review and Phabricator, mentored by Wikimedia engineers.
